the 1861 notes. The printing of this type was then passed on to J.T. Paterson.
This type replaced the T-35. The female figure in the center represents Ceres,
the Goddess of the Harvest, seated on a bale of cotton. She is holding a
caduceus in her left hand with two serpents entwined. In the lower left corner
is a sailor leaning on a capstan with a telescope in his hand. This note was
notes which were plate lettered-numbered A-9 through A-16. The T-36 PF-7 “Third
collectors. Thian did not get his register correct, so one must look for
remnants of parenthesis below the sailor and search for signs of alteration.
Finally, no Third Series T-36 note has a serial number greater than 2289.

Considering how thin and fragile the paper was for this issue, it’s amazing any examples still exist. Due to paper deterioration, the supply of these notes dwindles as the years pass, which ultimately will increase the value of survivors. This example is uncirculated and has great eye appeal(see enlarged scans). Hand signed, the signatures were not printed like most all early U.S. notes. Also, these notes were hand cut with scissors after printing, which explains why you rarely see any examples with perfect edges and centering. What a cool note to add to your holdings.

& Ball creation; a high quality $5 printed in 1862. This type’s printing
run was continued in Richmond
even as McClellan threatened the city. In the center is the portrait of
Christopher Gustavus Memminger, the Secretary of the Confederate Treasury. At
right is a figure that represents Minerva, the Goddess of War. White background
and printed in black. This note was “Receivable in payment for all dues except
export dues and fundable in Confederate States stock bearing 8% interest six
months after the ratification of a treaty of peace between the Confederate

This type comes on high
quality bank note paper. It may be found on plain paper as well as several
different kinds of watermarked paper including CSA in block and script letters,
the underrated J Whatman, and the extremely rare Wookey Hole Mill. This later
watermark is an English paper that Mr. Keatinge helped procure, and few reams
made it through the blockade. The Whatman and Wookey Hole Mill varieties are
very to extremely rare. This type comes from two major plates: W X Y Z with
engravers’ names and H I J K without the engravers’ names. Further there is an
error on one of the plates of H I J K where “receivable” is misspelled
“reoeivable” on the J position. Criswell and Bradbeer list a Whatman and Wookey
Hole Mill variety for the H I J K plate but none have been seen in at least
several decades (perhaps ever, it may have always been speculation). Also,
Criswell lists his CR-266, the T-34 PF-9, as common when it is in fact very
rare, perhaps being unwatermarked portions of the missing Whatman and/or Wookey
Hole Mill varieties.
